Nine Styles Of Wine…
There are nine basic styles of wine. Most wines can be categorized into one of these styles.
WHITE WINES
- 1 Sparkling Wine- the most difficult wine to make Champagne is served best at big celebrations.
- 2 Light-bodied White Wine- the most popular of all the wines, these wines are perfect to drink with most foods. An example is Sauvignon Blanc
- 3 Full-bodied White Wine-these wines are known for their rich, smooth taste. The best example is Chardonnay. California Chardonnays in particular are the World’s Best because of the warmer weather so in California the wine grapes used to make these wines do better in a warmer climate.
- 4 Aromatic (sweet) White Wine-these wines have a bursting aroma that springs out of the glass and into your nose. A prime example of this is Moscato d’ Asti.

RED WINES
- 5 Rose Wine-Known for their pale red color. These wines are made by “dying” the wine shortly with the skins of red grapes. Rose wines can be sweet or dry and a good example of a Rose is Cabernet Sauvignon
- 6 Light-bodied Red Wine-these wines are so pale that you can see through the glass. They have a light tannin (a sharp, acidic taste). The wine dries your mouth out. A classic light red wine is Pinot Noir.
- 7 Medium-bodied Red Wine-medium red wines are “food wines”. These wines have loads of flavor with a balance of zesty acidity. This makes them a great complement for a wide variety of foods. Merlot is a great example of these wines.
Bolder Wines
- 8 Full-bodied Red Wine-the most tannic of all the fine wines. They also have a rich, dark, deep red color, and they pair very well with steak. These wines are enjoyed alone as a cocktail because it has a particularly pleasing effect on the palate thus they taste really great. Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect example of one of these bold wines.
- 9 Dessert Wines-not so popular today, but in the 1800s they were more popular than dry wines but today dry wines are more popular. Several of these wines are so thick they are nearly as thick as maple syrup, so these wines are very sweet. They are some of the boldest, powerful, aromatic wines. Port wine is a popular dessert wine.
